Hunter Army Airfield Relocation Information

April 1st, 2008

Hunter Army Airfield houses mainly the 3rd Infantry Division. It is located conveniently on the southside of Savannah. The military installation is not very big and housing is a real concern. There were new homes added in the past year, but with troop movement to the area it’s not nearly enough. Although it’s not a big, it does have some conveniences.  There are no schools located on Hunter Army Airfield.  If you have children, they will be placed in designated public schools outside Hunter Army Airfield. If you are moving to the area, here are some useful phone numbers for the departments, battalions, etc…

On Hunter Army Airfield

Housing

As I stated above, housing can be a concern. When we first learned we were moving here, we found out the wait list was over a year. However with the new housing built, some housing concerns should be alleviated. But there was news of another unit being moved to Hunter, so contacting the housing department should be done as quickly as possible.

Public Schools by County, City, or Zip Code - A list of all the local schools separated by county then by city or zip code. I have listed the grades that each school accepts based on their information.

But I don’t want to go public! -  If public schools are not what you are looking for, this will give you some alternatives. I have listed many alternatives. Trust me, there are more. If you can not find anything suitable on this list, don’t hesitate to contact me for more.

For more information on these schools, go the Savannah Chatham Public Schools and Georgia Department of Education (On the right hand side, you will see a school finder. Once you select a method to find a school, you will be able to look at the schools information and access their report card.) Also keep in mind, there are new schools planned. A new Elementary and Middle School (or an Elementary-Middle school combo) are scheduled to be built off Jimmy Deloach Parkway in Pooler. There has also been discussion of a new High School being built but a location has not been decided on.

Housing - With continued growth in Richmond Hill, Pooler, Port Wentworth, and Effingham County, there are new developments being started frequently. For the most up to date information, stop back by or contact me directly.

If you are looking for housing outside of the Hunter AAF gates, you need to figure out where do you belong. There are many different areas in Savannah. You have the islands that has a laid back way of living. The average home price on the islands or the beach is $435,622. An exception is Skidaway Island, it averages $713,336 for housing. You have the downtown hussle and bussle folks. The average home price for downtown is $174,737. There are the historic lovers with a more artsy way of living. The historic district averages $379,200 for a home. On the southside, you have people just enjoying being close to the city but not in it. The average home price in the southside is $170,552. In Pooler and other outlying areas, you have you suburban folks that like a little more distance between them and the city. The homes in the West Chatham area sell for an average of $257,752. And even further still, there are the country folks. They enjoy having land to take care of and no city traffic to deal with. Homes in the Effingham County area average $171,268. And lastly, there is Bryan County. Bryan County has a Northern small historic railroad town and a Southern booming coastal area with many new communities planned. On average, a home will cost you $258,151 in Bryan County. The most expensive housing mainly coming from the Southern half. No matter what your lifestyle preference, there is a place for you. Most of these places have affordable housing along with some higher end areas. The closer to the beach you get, the more you will pay.

One dilemma you will be faced with in this area is whether or not you should take a chance on a new house or buy an existing home.  There are benefits for both sides. In the link above, I addressed some of  the possible benefits and drawbacks on buying a new home.

History, Tours, Ghosts and More

Savannah was established in 1733 and has the history to prove it. It has survived many wars, including the Civil War. Many a famous person has walked down the halls of historic homes and buildings. All this gives way to stories about Savannah’s haunted past. Needless to say, there are numerous places to tour, historic sites to see, and ghosts to look out for. In addition, you have the beach and all the modern conveniences.

For the golfers, it’s always time to tee off here in the Savannah area. We definitely have our fair share of golf courses to keep any golfer on their toes.

As a kid, I must admit I never liked History. History in a classroom doesn’t let you actually experience it. However, history can be fun when you are there, touring it, seeing it, touching it, and experiencing it.

I know, all that talk of history has the kids looking somewhat disappointed. But don’t fear, I know kids just wanna have fun and secretly so do adults!

Speaking of secrets, are you afraid of anything? Perhaps, you are afraid of ghosts? Personally, I love scary things. I love a great scary movie. However, I have yet to find one that truly scared me like the one I watched when I was 7. I ain’t afraid of no ghosts because I don’t believe in them. But some of these tours sound awesome. I can’t wait to try them myself especially the hearse one!

Ok, I know those are great and all, but what about shopping? Bay Street, River Street, Broughton Street, and the City Market are just a few of the places you can go to shop til you drop!

It’s great to have fun with the kids. But let’s face it, it’s nice to have some time to ourselves as well. So, what do we do with the children?  There are plenty of options available. I have not used any of these services before, nor is there inclusion a sign of my endorsement. That goes for everything in this section as well. Sorry, had to get that out of the way.

Sweets for the Georgia Peaches!

March 27th, 2008

Who doesn’t love a sweet treat every once in awhile? Walking along the River, you are tempted by two exquisite candy shops. You can smell them before you see them.

Along River Street, you will find the River Street Sweets and Savannah’s Candy Kitchen. I have had the pleasure of sampling a little from both places. The fudge from Savannah’s Candy Kitchen was smooth and melted in your mouth.  And the pralines at River Street Sweets were a big hit with the family.

On Broughton Street, you have Kilwin’s Fine Chocolates & Ice Cream. They were a company that started in Michigan and grew. If you are in the area, you should stop in and give them a try.

Are you in the mood for a cookie instead? If so, you should take a trip down White Bluff to find Two Smart Cookies. The name is definitely appropriate. The two owners are definitely smart cookies. What better way to welcome a friend’s or family member’s new addition, than with a cookie shaped onesie. They have numerous shapes to accomodate any event.

Savannah Cinnamon & Cookie Company offers more than just cookies. They have some wonderful mixes that will make your recipes pop. They even have their own recipes listed for you to follow.

The Gallery Expresso is great for a little coffee and a snack. No wait, it’s good for a lot more than that. They have a gift shop, gourmet coffee, baked goods, desserts, a lunch menu, and an art exhibition. On top of that, they are pet friendly!

Last but not least, there is the Byrd Cookie Company. They offer some unique cookies and gift ideas. They even have their own Paula Deen Collection. There most unique offering is there “vote with taste” tins. May be someone should tell the Presidential Candidates about these!

March 6th, 2008

A 37 million dollar state of the art apartment complex has begun at Fort Stewart. This complex with have a clubhouse, a pool, and a work out room. The best part is the complex is for single, non-commissioned officers. The army wants single soldiers to have the option of living on post like their married counterparts. There will be a total of 334 town homes consisting of one or two bedrooms. The complex has been planned for quite some time, even before news of the movement of a fifth brigade.

The St. Patrick’s Days Rules have been Set

February 29th, 2008

The rules for the St. Patrick’s Day parade have been set. And they don’t include buying your own little section of the squares. Also, transportation for the late night party goers is still be negiotated. The rules are: no one is allowed in the squares to stake claim to a spot before 6 am the day of, no grills, no amplified music, barricades will be used, a shuttle will run from the Oglethorpe Mall to the downtown area ($5 per adult), the festival on River Street will be on the 14th and 15th, there will be a police buffer, Bay Street will close at 8 pm on the festival days, and the only entrances to River Street will be from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, Lincoln Street, and East Broad Street.

So, it looks as if tradition has won! Hopefully the barricades don’t impede on the male paraders getting their kiss! For more information stop by www.savannahnow.com/stpats. If you are coming from out of town, don’t forget to pack the green (clothes, beads, etc….).
